This is a post authored by Mr Abhivardhan, our Chairperson.
Since Stanford University has come up with their Artificial Intelligence Index Report for 2024, let's discuss merely their Chapter 9, the most important one.
Why? The rest of the report is very biased towards #American values and realities. In short, except Chapter 9, the whole report is US-centric. Here are some points.
1️⃣ "The public is pessimistic about AI’s economic impact. In an Ipsos survey, only 37% of respondents feel AI will improve their job. Only 34% anticipate AI will boost the economy, and 32% believe it will enhance the job market." [Read Pages 5-6 of the Report]
Of course - why would people not be pessimistic? The cost of GPUs is at an all-time high, and AI hype has already affected the hashtag#GlobalSouth countries' capacity to invest in AI infrastructure. Even Indians are having serious problems to address.
2️⃣ "Significant demographic differences exist in perceptions of AI's potential to enhance livelihoods, with younger generations generally more optimistic. For instance, 59% of Gen Z respondents believe AI will improve entertainment options, versus only 40% of baby boomers." [Pages 10-12]
I agree. A survey had erroneously claimed that just because consumers love a few videos of hashtag#Sora by OpenAI, and say that Sora would replace human ecosystem of cinema people across even Hollywood. I am not surprised why baby boomers do not have the same optimism.
3️⃣ "New research from the AI Index reveals a significant lack of standardization in responsible AI reporting. Leading developers, including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, primarily test their models against different responsible AI benchmarks. This practice complicates efforts to systematically compare the risks and limitations of top AI models."
This explains why India requires decentralised forms of AI standardisation, and why the efforts by Indian Society of Artificial Intelligence and Law matter.
4️⃣ The global awareness of ChatGPT in India is at 82%, which is not surprising. 36% Indian users utilise ChatGPT daily and 39% utilise ChatGPT weekly, explaining the major audience from the Indian demographic.
5️⃣ 28% of Indians believe that AI could cause dehumanisation of services (which is not an unfair understanding, to be fair), 48% of Indians believe hashtag#AI may impact jobs (which is also fair), and 36% of Indians are concerned about their "own ability" to use AI.
These stats clearly explain that AI is not taking over jobs in India. Instead if the workforce, businesses, freelancers and government personnel lack the consistency to understand what AI or GenAI use case may enhance their abilities, and not necessarily productivity, they may not be able to counter the manipulative and nefarious proliferation / democratisation of AI.
What do you think? I think the report (AI Index) is overrated, and we must do better research on AI ethics surveys.
