Had a short trip to #Hyderabad to relish the infamous Niloufer Cafe & Karachi Bakery and speak on Mediation in the Digital Age, in a panel discussion conducted by the School of Law, Mahindra University, as a part of the International Mediation Conclave 2024 on August 9, 2024.
In the discussion outlined, I emphasised on a simple point that the use of #AI in dispute resolution and even "dispute governance" is already a new normal.
As pointed out in the intriguing discussion with all the panelists, it is obvious that online forms of dispute resolution may not be regarded as mediation directly due to the voluntary nature of mediation as a form of ADR.
That being said, for chatbots, or augmented consumer/ client redressal mechanisms, the role of #artificialintelligence in any form of judicial governance, dispute governance or dispute resolution will only succeed when we create simple trust-based infrastructure and awareness among the beneficiaries.
The digital divide problem is long-run across stakeholders, be it bureaucrats, aggrieved parties, or judges / mediators.
The discussion had also pivoted on the state of AI regulation in India, and I had highlighted that we do not need incessant regulation, nor should the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology adopt the ideology of solutionism, that merely building Aadhar or DPI will solve everything.
Governance is weakened by improper systems of maintenance and redressal, and I am sure the Government of India understands that. Instead of mere solutionism, public officials must understand core policy making and technology management beyond the marketed intent of "solutions".
I am grateful for the kind invite by Sagar Singamsetty, and the School of Law, Mahindra University. Special mention to Vibhav, one of the volunteers for his kindest efforts to escort and support me for the remainder of the event.
I was present during the conduct of all sessions of the conclave, and must say that all the sessions were innovative, with amazing & realistic insights, for professionals and students interested to pursue a career in #arbitration, #mediation and #conciliation.
P.S.: The R&D Committee of the Indian Society of Artificial Intelligence and Law led by Kailash Chauhan and Supratim Bapuli invites startups, MSMEs and research labs working in the AI domain in India to register and express interest to demonstrate their AI solutions/ projects at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScIhvbFxid8OQIKEZjl5YbIsnq8Xk-_me2SCaYiPVExX-l-Sw/viewform
