One year of Deciphering Regulative Methods for Generative AI, VLiGTA-TR-002
From Abhivardhan, our Chairperson
This is a post authored by Abhivardhan, our Chairperson.
It's been an year since Indic Pacific Legal Research LLP had introduced VLiGTA-TR-002 (https://www.indicpacific.com/post/new-report-deciphering-regulative-methods-for-generative-ai-vligta-tr-002) to the world.
We hoped that many would find this report intriguing and found some incredible feedback, hence thanks.
But what is VLiGTA-TR-002? Don't worry - it's not some password or special code.
This was our important legal and policy technical report covering nearly all major legal issues around regulating Generative AI.
This report was published in May 2023, and Kapil Naresh and Yashudev Bansal had co-authored this amazing magnum opus with me.
We have always been grateful for Rodney D Ryder, Scriboard for authoring a foreword for this coveted report.
Why does this report still matter?
Well, we predicted / analysed certain legal trends around #GenAI when in the Indian law circles, AI wasn't even an important topic, and a lot of them have been proven true such as:
1️⃣ GenAI tools can manufacture consent of users while they involve themselves in the process of "prompt engineering" (asking LLMs as #AIAssistants multiple times about something). That is both a copyright and privacy & consent issue.
2️⃣ Most GenAI use cases cannot pass a generic threshold of industrial viability beyond 6-12 months. This has turned out to be true as well. We had therefore suggested to create industrial standards to distinguish how human autonomy is measured when GenAI solutions are engineered.
3️⃣ AI Hype is a real problem, and must be legally measured under post-Reagan practices of competition law, we explained that in the form of a table.
4️⃣ I had proposed we should classify GenAI as General Intelligence or General Purpose AI, Standalone GenAI and Derivative GenAI applications. This classification still matters, and stands vindicated.

Amidst all this chaos, it's no wonder we've lost sight of what AI truly is and why it matters. The truth is, AI isn't some mysterious, all-powerful entity that's going to take over the world and enslave humanity.
It's up to us to cut through the noise, focus on developing responsible, ethical AI solutions, and ensure that the technology benefits society as a whole.
