Amazon has patented Natural Language Processing (filed in 2020), and why it matters
From Abhivardhan, our Chairperson
This month has been gruelling to begin with.
A lot is still on plate, so I could not discuss this major update around Amazon getting a patent on Natural Language Processing.
I am sure India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will also come to know after some random media report.
Anyways, the implications are huge since this application was filed in 2020 itself, and could begin an era of patent wars by multinational companies. This patent was approved on July 4, 2024, if I stand corrected.
While third party systems and aspects can be applied and interlinked, what aspects of artificial intelligence products, systems, components, infrastructure, or services can then be patented?
We must remember that in two major jurisdictions, within the bounds of intellectual property law, in the #US (USPTO) and the #UK, the patentability of processes around artificial intelligence has already been recognised.
From a strategic perspective, Indian innovators and builders in AI would have to now prepare for AI patentability risks and licensing risks ahead, for protecting their data, innovation and maybe processes forward.
This is a legal rabbithole going forward. We at Indic Pacific Legal Research LLP care about the future of India's AI and digital technology ecosystem, so we can inform that a comprehensive analysis of this patent application, is already in works.
I am also happy to announce that a Hindi edition of India's first AI regulation proposal, AIACT.IN, Version 3, will be out soon, for our Hindi audiences.
