We had a fantastic session by the Policy Innovation Committee of the Indian Society of Artificial Intelligence and Law on October 12, 2024.
Okay, so we had discussed about the Definitive Features of various Artificial Intelligence Legislations.
Watch the complete session at:
While discussing definitions alone does not offer context on the intent behind any AI legislation / policy framework, we traversed pretty well on global legislations from common law countries like Singapore, Australia, etc., to the European Union & Council of Europe, China, India's private AI bill, aiact.in, and then West Asian countries from Saudi Arabia to UAE and others.
Raymond Sun points out how Chinese legislations and guidelines on AI emphasise the blend of competition policy, and data protection laws/information security.
Aleksandr Tiulkanov points out the thermostat conundrum: the paradox of defining AI as if it some "thermostat" (Kevin Schawinski kind of inspired this discussion, and yes we missed him this time).
Dr.Hoda A.Alkhzaimi points out how in West Asia, and the larger Global South, AI governance policy and AI industry policy emphasis is on hands-on direct facilitation to solve problems. She also points out that some basic technology regulations are always necessary - like on data, cyber etc., in general.
Sankalp Srivastava points out his interesting remarks on the ontological ramifications to defining AI. He points out that AI will be omnipresent in so many facets, so we must be mindful when we define and give some substantive legal recognition of AI, by definitions and otherwise.
This session, like all sessions at ISAIL are not talk shops. I am glad that the objective of the session was achieved well.
Meanwhile, do not forget to watch a trialogue between me, Shirsha Ray Chaudhuri and Bogdan Grigorescu on the Legal-Ethical Impact of Generative AI on Cultural Ecosystems, and Creativity (cc
):I am also sharing links to our podcasts on the former ad hoc AI Committee Chair Gregor Strojin's remarks on the Council of Europe's AI ethics angle:
Also, do watch Maksim Karliuk's earlier remarks on the UNESCO AI Ethics Recommendation:
Also, ISAIL will complete its 5 years in November 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.
